We at Per'La roast all of our coffees in small batch single origins, since every coffee has a different "sweet spot" that will highlight the coffee's inherent characteristics and all coffees have different densities and moisture contents they all need to be roasted differently. We then blend those single origin coffees after they have been roasted, into our different blends. This ensures that the characteristics of those coffees are highlighted. This would not be the case if we blended all the raw coffees together and roasted them for the blends. The difference between small batch and large batch coffee roasting goes beyond just scale — it greatly affects the flavor, helps with quality control, increases consistency, and gives us flexibility.
Benefits of Small Batch Coffee Roasting
1. Greater Control Over Flavor Development
- We can make precise adjustments to temperature, time, and airflow.
- We get more nuanced flavor profiles that can be developed and tailored to specific single origin beans.
- Allows for us to experiment with origins, blends, and roast levels to get them into the sweet spot.
2. Fresher Coffee For Our Customers
- Smaller batches mean less time sitting on shelves, giving you a fresher product.
- Our model is that we roast-to-order, delivering coffee at peak freshness, smaller batches means we only roast what we need for that day's orders.
- We feel that this is better suited for our customers who value freshness and quality.
3. Quality Over Quantity
- It is much easier for us to monitor each roast closely, reducing the chance of defects and miss roasts.
- Ensures that we can carefully select high-quality, raw coffees that meet our high standards.
- Lets us do regular smaller shipments to our customers so that they in turn can serve their customers with the freshest coffee available.
4. Agility & Flexibility
- It makes it easier for us to try new beans, blends, or roast profiles and adjust those profiles when needed.
- It helps us respond quickly to trends, customer feedback and seasonal offerings. Often changing blends due to customer feedback and demographic changes in customer seasonality
- It's ideal for when we have limited edition roasts or micro-lots.
